COB (Chip-on-Board) is the flip-chip LED packaging technology behind five of our product lines — COB-Pro, COB Bèta, COB-poster, COB-kubusen ons Alles-in-één LED-tv. This guide explains how COB works, how it compares to SMD and MIP, and which of our products is the right fit for your project.
Chip-on-Board: One Substrate, No Visible Seams
COB stands for Chip-on-Board. Instead of packaging each LED individually and mounting it onto a PCB like SMD (Surface-Mounted Device), COB bonds multiple flip-chip LEDs directly onto a single substrate, then encapsulates the whole surface. The result is a smoother, more uniform display surface with less visible pixel structure at close range, higher contrast, and better resistance to moisture, dust, and physical impact than individually packaged LEDs.

COB (Chip-on-Board) mounts multiple LED chips directly onto a single substrate before encapsulation, instead of packaging each LED individually like SMD. The result is a smoother surface with less visible pixel structure, higher contrast, and better moisture resistance. DOIT VISION uses flip-chip COB across five product lines: COB Pro, COB Beta, COB Poster, COB Cube, and our All-in-One LED TV.
COB Pro is our 16:9 flagship — 600×337.5mm cabinets, P0.62 to P1.875, up to 10,000:1 contrast, built for control rooms and broadcast studios. COB Beta is 4:3, 640×480mm cabinets, P1.25 to P1.86, sized for multi-screen control walls and retail. They use different cabinet dimensions and cannot be tiled together — decide your aspect ratio first.

COB Pro delivers up to 10,000:1 contrast and covers P0.62–P1.875 at standard fine pitch pricing. MIP factory color-bins each mini-LED individually, reaching 100,000:1 contrast and single-LED field repair, at a 20–40% price premium. Choose MIP for 24/7 mission-critical screens; choose COB Pro for most control room and broadcast projects.
Novastar and Colorlight sending boxes and video processors are compatible with all our COB product lines — COB Pro, COB Beta, COB Poster, and COB Cube. We recommend the specific sending card and processor model based on your screen resolution and refresh rate requirement during quotation.
COB typically carries a premium over standard SMD at the same pixel pitch, since flip-chip mounting and encapsulation add manufacturing steps. The gap narrows at finer pixel pitches (below P1.5) where SMD’s own packaging cost rises. Exact pricing depends on pitch, cabinet size, and order volume — request a quote for a same-day number.
